Hey folks, I've tried to find the answer but gave up so here is my question. When building a grill Island is it better to leave the space under the actual grill open? By that I mean I'm going to cement board the entire Island but to I sheet the sunken part (sides and bottom) or leave it open? I've seen a ton of pics and videos and I see it done both ways.

My thoughts are this. If its open then some rain will get in but there is nothing that can get damaged. If it is enclosed then water will just sit under the grill and some will get in through the hole for the gas line.

Thanks in advance
