Full Version: Weber Genesis conversion to charcoal?????

OK, you can see my cooking vessels in my sig. I have a Weber Genesis B that's got to be going on 15 years old and in excellent condition. I bought replacement grates for it a year ago and have since reconditioned the original CI grates. For a gasser, I'll continue to use my JennAir. What I was thinking was removing the guts of my Weber and turning it into a charcoal grill, that would be potentially built in or part of my outdoor kitchen on my deck. My first concerns will be how to account for the hot ash, installation of some vents, and the ability to isolate the heat from it's surroundings. Anyone done something like this or have any suggestions?? Also, the reason I'm looking at this is:

1) Another BGE will be $700.
2) A Stainless charcoal insert will be $800-1000.
3) I'd like to have the option of using a charcoal grill and the egg (while smoking) and even the JennAir (sides) simultaneiously.
4) Freeing up the budget on the insert will give me an option of adding a roof over my outdoor kitchen.

Alright, let me have it!

Would love some feedback, I have an old Weber 1000, the bright red one, but just replaced it (with another Weber), but would either like to convert the old to charcoal or turn into a smoker, if any one has suggestions. Have you done anything with your's yet?
