I am looking to build some sort of contraption so that I can grill over the camp fire when we have bon-fires in the backyard.
I don't want anything real extravagant and don't have a whole lot of cash.
Anyone have any plans they care to share?
Thank you

No...
It is pretty much level to the ground and lined with large rocks.

Here is something that I learned from one of my buddies at their hunting camp. They have an old cast iron manhole cover with 4 pieces of rebar welded to the bottom. It is really heavy and they usually leave it set up by the fire. When they are getting ready to cook they shovel some of the hot coals under the manhole cover and let them get it good and hot. It's the perfect outdoor cooking surface, steaks, eggs, bacon.
They have modified them now and are selling them with a propane burner underneath.

SWEET!
I think this is what I'm looking for. Can you grill burgers and steaks on these things?

Oh yea, works for pretty much anything. The rotisserie is a nice feature also...

Check out Bass Pro Shop. They have "camp grills" that sit over the camp fire.
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s...5009000_325-9-4I have the the 24"x16" and the 36"x18". I have had 6 slabs of ribs on the larger one. Sometimes i will stack the grills so that i can rotate the done meats to the top grill to keep them warm.

I forget whether it was here or on another grilling forum, but this is cheap and effective. I can't find the post, so I cannot post a photo, but it's not rocket science.
First, get a Weber replacement grill from Lowes or HD (not the hinged grate, just the regular). $16
Then get four pieces of 8-inch length threaded rod, 8 nuts and 8 fender washers. Thread a nut on a rod, a fender washer, then stick it through the grill, another washer, then the final nut. You end up with a 4-legged Weber grill about 8 inches high. Build your fire, bring it down to embers, and you are G2G. For under $20.
An alternative if you make big fires and need variable height is to get 3 lengths of rebar, tie them together at the top with coat hanger wire, teppee-fashion, and hang light chains with S-hooks from it to hold the Weber grill at whatever height you need.
Both are cheap and foolproof. I know, because I'm a fool!

I came across
this at REI the other day. It's all in one fire and grill, just stick it in the ground.
If you go to their website they have some cool stuff,
