i used my brand new brass bristle bbq brush that was purchased from Superstore in canada, and all the bristles started falling out while i was cleaning.

i need a new one and fast.

are they all about the same quality, or is there a cat's ass version out there? preferably available in canada

i do NOT need a scraper as my grill has the later porcelain coated grill plates. so for the weber one below, i would just cut it off

the weber one looks nice: http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/...tk=P_PartNumber. i just hit "CHECK INVENTORY" and it says N/A, but i should be able to fit one somewhere here.

thanks

I buy mine at my local plumbing supply house. No brand name on them, but they are heavy duty, don't lose the bristles and last a long time. I imagine they are made for plumbers to use on pipes, and thus are a better grade. The ones I've purchased from HD and the likes just don't last at all. Very chinsey, the bristles bend very easily and are very sparse (as opposed to the commercial grade brushes) available at plumbing supply houses. More pricey (I'm thinking I paid @ 15 bucks) or so. But I get several years out of them.

brucered,

What Mike said. You can also check welding supply stores. I do have one of the Weber brushes like you're looking at and it's a good one. The bristles are stiff and not soft like a lot of them, but I still think you'll get a better brush at a plumbing, or welding supply.

thanks for the replies. can someone post a pic of what i should be looking for?

so am i safe to use the metal scraper part of most bbq brushes on porcelain enamel grates?

brucered,

Look here and scroll down to wire brushes. They come in carbon, ss, & brass. Any supply store should have something similar. Plumbing supply brushes should be similar.

Welding Tools

If you're talking about that metal scraper that is at the end of most brushes, I definitely wouldn't use it on porcelainized cast iron. When I'm through cooking, I leave my grill on high for 10-15 minutes with the hood closed and about all I have left is white ash to brush off. My grates are ss, but I've never had to do anything but brush the ash off of the grates after the high temp clean.

Mike, do you think you can provide us with a photo of the brush you use? is it the thin short handled kind of brush with long bristles ?

picked up this one today for $5 at princess auto.

i'll try it out tonight, if it works, i'll go buy a few more for backup. princess auto stock comes and goes, so they might not have them again in 3 months.

Sure - brush away with yer brass! Add some water with a spray bottle while you're at it (with the grates hot). And use oil to keep them lubed (not motor oil). wink.gif The brass won't scratch the ss as the bristles are much softer. Some even use ss brushes with no problems. I'd stay away from the oven cleaner. It's okay for a little grundge and grease to build up in your grill for flavor and to protect the steel from corrosion. Mostly swipe those grates clean to prevent food from sticking.

Welcome
Here is my first question
Exactly how clean are you trying to get your grates?
If you do in fact have a Charbroil commercial grill then the only thing I would use on it is a brass brush.
Those grates are not really SS.
They may have a little in them but at that price point you will not get 304 SS
Also you should not clean your grates until just before you so a cook.
Leaving the prior cook on them until you are ready to cook again will prolong the life of your grates
Tubby's Smokehouse
I use these guys brushes the price is right, been getting them for work for years, I also like their wire wheels, put one of those on a drill motor great for (cold) SS grates.

I've got one of these - it works pretty good.

I also have one of these that works good with water:

Kind of funny - my google search for the grill wizard (couldn't remember what it was called) returned this as a search result!

Never would have guessed I'd pop up in a search!
