I got an event grill from Sams for $250 on clearance. Because I only intend to use it 3-4 a year I came up with a way to get a few more uses out of it. All of the machined parts were done by my students. (my part time job)
I also figured a way to use my remote temp probe while the pig is rotating.

No plans for Darwin awards, I'll put a cover on before the first cook.

The gear motor has no reverse. or E stop.

Plan on having a pig roast at the end of the semester.

I'm used to it. sad.gif

That is a nice set up. Nice use of the machine shop to make the gearing. cool.gif

Did you say hog cooker or DOG cooker? I'd use a little younger dog as the older ones get a bit tough. wink.gif Nice job! Give your students an A! Can't wait to see the cooking results pictures. Please keep loose clothing away from that chain and motor so no one gets hurt and the E stop would be a great addition... just in case.

Hog... I mean DOG lover,

Ditto on all the above comments! smile.gif

A screwdriver jammed in the gears makes a great E-Switch! Or, you can buy here for only $12.95 http://www.grizzly.com/products/h8243 I've made use of some of their 220 paddle switches on my woodworking machinery.

Your students show a lot of talent - you should be proud of their accomplishment! Of course, a self-pat on the shoulder there for your excellent guidance! I'm envious of your tooling and equipment! The dog shot was disconcerting. Hope he doesn't try and jump in there when it's hot! wink.gif Really nice of you to share this project - can't wait to see some cooking shots in progress!

Excellent job! mike

That's awesome! I've got the same grill that I use for my bbg festival business! Maybe I missed something-- but did you/students build the rotisserie?
Keep the unit undercover (inside) when not in use and you should get years out of the burners. One concern....roasting anything that throws off a lot of fat can be a problem with the design (like a big fire). Make sure you have a way to divert the fat and or catch it. (especially if someone's not watching over the process)
You're team can come to Atlanta anytime you like to do mods on my equipment. biggrin.gif

Thanks for all the positive comments. I fully intend to cover the chain. Nothing stops a BBQ like a little kids finger getting cut off. Don't even get me started on what my buddy's may do. blink.gif

Thanks for the grease fire info. I will make a deflector ASAP

I kinda was liking the suicide chain and sprocket, I guess if your going that route you might want to build a box around the whole grill so the little tykes don't burn there fingers touching the box wink.gif
make sure when serving the little hellions there food they blow on it cause it's going to be hot wink.gif

Aww I say do like I did when my kids were toddlers let them touch it unsure.gif it will be the last time they do................

having fun
