Wow! My facebook homepage is loaded with comments (about 20 now) of friends returning from the festival already. I'm dying just reading their comments about the food! Here's just a few (I've abbreviated the names and deleted the photos for privacy):

JE I've just finished my visit and I must say... Arrive around 10:30 am to get the lay of the land then start your day in line at the Pit- he's the king... Then walk around. It's a great event... Only in NYC... And Heartland Brewery is serving up great 6 dollar draughts!!!5 hours ago

CK The Big Apple BBQ was awsome. Just got in from it. Had so much BBQ, ribs, pulled prok sandwich with coleslaw on it the best, and good smoked sausage. on the calander for next yr already. And also the lines were not bad at all to wait for the food. awsome Heartland beer garden.about an hour ago
JA Just got home from it. If you were dumb enough to not get there when it first opened then you will encounter alot of the pitmasters all out of food. and if you didn't buy a fast pass you even more stupid.
Jacks old south was the best brisket i had ever and we were second on the fast pass line at 11 when he had all his best stuff out. Big Bobs is the best pulled pork and checkered pig and bakers were the best ribs. See ya next year as usual!5 minutes ago

Sunday morning and I'm still full,

First time I've been to one of these. As I got off the bus, the air smelled just like my back yard of recent dates. The aroma of burning wood permeated the routine scents of NYC. I got there at least an hour early and had a chance to speak to some of the vendors. They were from all over and very friendly. The truck size smokers and ovens they used for smoking and cooking were quite spectacular in appearance. I was a fool not to bring my camera. They exploited a clever way of setting up the event. Except for a few sponsors and the band shell, the majority of the vendors were set up along the perimeter of Madison Square Park, leaving the park itself for people to use to picnic on the grass and sit on the benches to nourish themselves endlessly! Picnic benches were also set up along the surrounding streets, but nothing could really have been done to accommodate seating for the masses that formed by 11:00 am. Expecting it made it a lot easier to deal with. People were understanding and made room, if your needed it, to engulf the endless foods offered by the masters of the BBQ.

For NYC, $8.00 a plate was almost reasonable for the servings they issued. After one was consumed, you just had to set your mind that the next order of business was to wait on line again for the next tasting. By the time you reached the next cashiers, food in hand, your hunger returned ready to be ousted by another culinary delight. After 3 servings and sides, I was ready to call it a day of eating. I sampled Texas ribs, Carolina ribs, Gibson pork. The pork was awesome, the Carolina ribs were good but I enjoyed the Texas style the most. Maybe it was because I got the bonus of an end piece with more meat and their bbq sauce was excellent. One thing I noticed, the quality of the BBQ was dependent of the length of the line. I tried one more rib sample, for the road, from a vendor with virtually no line and it was my least favorite of them all.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable experience. Beautiful weather, friendly people and good food. I tell ya, this festival must have reduced the Sus Scrofa Domestica population in this country quite drastically. A bone meal company could be started and NY State could be fertilized with all of the discarded bones flying around Madison Square Park yesterday.

If anyone locally reads this and has the opportunity to head over there today, you should. I'd go back if I could.

Thanks all and be well,

Yep - you confirmed all the reports I'm getting. I worked through the night - went home at 6:30 this morning, showered and back by 7:30. So now it's my first coffee break and I'm ENVIOUS of all those visiting both the Big Apple BBQ as well as the Seafood Festival just a scant mile from me. Oh well, they'll be others! wink.gif

Thanks for the post - I might run over at lunch time to 7-11. They now carry Asian or BBq wings at six for $3.29.... sigh... wink.gif
