Well I am thrilled. I had to wait for almost a month to get this grill. I live in Daytona Beach FL and we have a vender called Daytona Gas and Grills. The manager told me he had never gotten a Sovereign 90 although he had Imperial 490 and the Regal 490. I did much research on the net including this great forum and fell in luv with the Sovereign 90. Why? Well I like the throwback look of the aluminum convection oven. It is modular. What do I mean by that. Well it is easy to take apart and clean. The rotisserie burner and parts come off easy. Also the burners can be reached with minimal difficulty from the back.
This puppy heats up fast and large. In fact I was a little afraid to use it. When I warmed it up for the preburn I only had it on medium high for 15 minutes since the thermometer was pegged at well over 700 * and smoke was coming out. Either this puppy has a very insulated cookbox or the thermometer was stuck since even after opening the lid to cool the interior of the box down the thermometer was still at over 700. On the 2nd burn, I started at med-high again, but then turned the dials to medium and the thermometer still showed over 700. Also the thermometer does not go all the way back to the left and when cool says 100 *.
Today I decided to just put it on medium and medium for my 1st bbq (ribs and chicken quarters). The box stayed between 350-400 even though I opened the hood to flip and check my smoke box (Smoker Pro). The grates are emormous 3/8" SS and very heavy. Even after the heat is off it takes a while for this grill to cool down (30 minutes or more).
Even though I didn't have to, I took the burners out and cleaned the interior just to see how easy it was. My previous grill was a Ducane Affinity 4400 and it was very hard to take apart. The rot burner was lit from the front so the gas tube wient thru the cookbox. Here I can just remove it and only put it in when I use the rot. One had to take the from panel off, etc. By the way the dual burners are great (even heat). I have never had a grill with aluminum cookbox so I used the Grill Pro Natural cleaner and used both a plastic scraper and SS grill brush to clean the interior. I may have been harsh since I may have scraped some of the paint off (can see silver in some places) and still there is carbon buildup spots. I will be on the phone with BK customer service to check on the thermometer and if I did some harm to the alum cookbox. I want to take care of this grill since I love its looks and also the way it bbqs. If anyone with a BK has any advice on setting the heating levels, how accurate the thermometer is, and cleaning the inside of the oven please let me know. Thanks, for letting me share my .02 cents.
