I've noticed that most people posting here use kosher salt. I also prefer it to regular table salt, but recently I've taken to using sea salt, ground in a mill and prefer it even over kosher salt.

Hi Hoss,

I normally use kosher salt myself. I'm the first to admit I know very little about salt, other then I use it for cooking. The web is an amazing source to learn things. Here is a link to [SaltWorks. This is a great place to find the differences in one salt from another.

Thanks a lot, Eric wink.gif . Now I'm gonna have to try some of those. Never realized how many different types of salt there are.
I've been using Mediterranean sea salt, it's white and coarse, with a unique flavor.
Ah, well. Learn some thing new cool.gif biggrin.gif .

I've been getting mine at Costco. Salt comes in the grinder. Williams Sonoma or Cracker barrel are good places for mills and grinders, a bit spendy but usually good quality.
I'll be checking Saltworks out though.

Hi Bill,

A salt/pepper mill that I've been looking at is called a "Graviti Pepper Mill. I like the idea that it dispenses from its top when tipped over. My current mill dispenses from the bottom. It always leaves behind pepper any place you set it. Here is a link to a source for it Graviti

McCormik has just come out with disposible grinders(mills) for sea salt, black pepper ,
other pepper blends,and grindable herbs and seasonings.I found them at Wal Mart for ~$1.50.They are about the same size as reg. salt & peppers. Take the top off, twist the ring around the top of the container. and put the cap back on.When it's empty , just throw the thing away. Seasonings stay fresh and you can keep all together in that little door rack you installed. No I don't work for McCormik or Wally World!

Yes I saw that. They actually have a whole series of grindables. See http://www.mccormick.com/productlist.cfm?S...rchType=product for their variety. Of course you wouldn't get some of these nice expensive salts shown at [SaltWorks. rolleyes.gif

It will work with salt or pepper is what I've been told when I called on them a while back. There was a demo on TV showing them about a year ago. When I was first looking at them they wanted about $40 each. I figured with a little time the price would come down. It has. On my list of things to purchase in the future.

REDMOND RealSalt. Google the name.

Mined in Utah, no processing, lots of trace minerals. Excellent flavor. Salt is not just salt. I find it at the local WHOLE FOODS and CENTRAL MARKET (upscale, organic full-service groceries).

I use the shaker for all cooking, and buy the Kosher Coarse Ground to go in the stainless steel salt grinder/pepper grinder set by COLE & MASON (at Sur Le Table) for the table. I use an Indian pepper blend in the pepper grinder.

RealSalt and freshly-ground pepper are fundamental to my cooking. RealSalt is so good I threw out the Mortons the same day I first bought this REDMOND product. I use DIAMOND CRYSTAL Kosher for brining as the only other salt in the house.

Thanks for the salt tip. I guess I'm going to have to give some of these special salts a try. I never really thought there was a differents. As far as cooking, do you use the RealSalt for anything that one would use normal table salt? How course do you grind it?

RealSalt is a straight substitute for standard table salt (as to flavoring; for some other purposes, such as brining, sea salt is used in a different amount). See their website. I buy the coarse type for the grinder to be able to season for cooking (rough) or table (fine).

A great source for all things grindable is Penzeys (http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/shophome.html). They have an amazing selection of all different kinds of salt, pepper, spices... you name it. I think different kinds of salt can mean all the difference in the world in some recipes, so buying the right kind is key, and these guys know their stuff. Let alone all the other kinds of spices you can get through them that you'll never see in a supermarket, even the more upscale ones.

I always prefer to season with kosher or sea salt, but when I fry turkeys or make a brine, table salt is fine.
