I did some baby backs this weekend indirect with added smoker boxes. When I got done, I noticed smoke had left a stain on the lid of my grill. My SS cleaner didn't do a thing for it. Should I use something like easy off to clean it?

Hi Bill,

I have had good luck with Bar Keepers Friend. Click to view attachment
Just take a moderately damp cloth and sprinkle on some Bar Keepers Friend and rub the area. Rinse with water and cloth, then dry.
I would use Easy Off Oven Cleaner only as a last resort.

Thanks Eric. Sure don't want to screw it up. I ordered some of the Easy Off Oven and Grill cleaner but had only planned on using it for the insides. Have you or anyone had a similar stain? I'm going to have to change how I put the smoker boxes in to prevent this from happening again.

I'm going to have to change how I put the smoker boxes in to prevent this from happening again.[/quote]I have a Great Outdoors smoker that I do all my smoking in. I normally don't use the Jenn Air for this. However, yes, I have had stains like yours, mostly around the openings of the grill and when doing longer styles of cooking like rotisserie, or fatty stuff that smokes alot.

When using your smoke box do you leave the top on it? I know that some in the forum leave them off. I would leave it on. This will slow the smoke and reduce the staining.

Hey Eric,

Normally I would use my smoker too but I was only cooking for myself so it wasn't worth firing it up. I left the covers off the smoker boxes and just used the flame tamer. That let me use tongs to lift up the tamer and add more chips. I won't do it that way again. I just ordered some Bar Keepers Friend so I hope that will clean this off. I'll try it on the edge first. Thanks again for your help.

This is the stuff to use smile.gif Make sure you rinse it well as it will cause the stainless to oxidize if not completely cleaned off.

Thanks guys. I was really worried that I'd have to live with that unsightly stain. I now feel better with your two expert opinions telling me the same thing. biggrin.gif

There is one commercial product that is excellent, it's called Super Doug, mfg by Zep. This product removes grease and soot buildup. Unfortunately it's hard to get, since it's only available commercially. Sam's has an oven and grill cleaner in gallons thats OK but I prefer the Zep product.
bill b
Thanks Don,

I didn't realize there was a separate forum for just cleaning. Sorry. Since what you recommend is only available commercially, how would one get some? I didn't see Super Doug on Zep's web site either. since I already ordered some Bar Keeper's Friend, I'm hoping that will cure my problem but any information on how to get this product would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Bill

Edit: I did find what I believe you're talking about at http://www.zep.com/ProductCatalog/ProductB...21&pageNumber=4 but they carry a lot of other food device cleaners as well.

Yep. If you can buy it. sad.gif I'll see if the Bar Keepers Friend does the job first. If not, I'll pursue this further. Have a great grilling weekend.

You can also try stainless polish found in just about every auto store. I use the following on my 304 stainless steel exhaust system for my SRT-10 Ram. Works great taking black burnt on soot off the tail pipe tip.

Thanks Mark. If the Bar Keepers friend doesn't work, I'll try this. I ordered it on line so I should have it this week.

I know its too late for you bill, but Lowe's actually carries the bar keepers friend product, or at least my local Lowe's does.

Thanks big c. I just didn't bother looking at all the local options I guess. sad.gif

In closing, the bar keeper's friend did the job.Click to view attachment Thanks everyone. And here's a SS cleaner my neighbor gave me. Click to view attachment It says right on the can approved by the USDA for use in Federally inspected meat and poultry plants.

Glad to hear that the Bar Keeper's Friend did the job. So how do you like the SS cleaner? Does it seem to reduce the finger marks?

Eric D B)

Hi Eric,

I'm not sure anything completely prevents finger marks sad.gif but I think it's better than the SS cleaner I was using from Easy Off. I've done a little searching though and I don't see this exact 3M can anywhere. I'll have to ask my neighbor if it's just available commercially.

This weekend while I was out and about with my wife, I looked at a number of so called stainless steel cleaning/polishing sprays on the market. A number of them warn not to use on surfaces for use with food. Seeing that the 3M stuff you have is, it would be nice to find a source for it. I think it was Don of BBQ Source that mentioned denatured alcohol works good for cleaning the stainless. I wonder if this is what is in some of the sprays? If memory serves me right, denatured alcohol has something in it to make it toxic. Maybe this is the reason not to have it around food?

Hi Eric,

I'll have to read the label when I get home tonight and see what's in it. But you're right, having this USDA comment makes me feel a lot better smile.gif . I'll also read the label on the easy off SS cleaner and compare. Once I got the smoke stain off, I decided to continue the cleaning so all grates and the warming tray and drip pan got a thorough cleaning. I also checked my burners and they looked good and passed the "hack saw" test.

I'll post what I find tonight.

Bill

Easy off SS cleaner doesn't list ingredients but says not to use on food contact areas. It does say for use on freezers, refrigeraators, water fountainss, etc. The 3M lists Water, Mineral oil, Isobutane, Sorbitan Create, Ethanolamine as ingredients and says it has no petroleum distillates. There's no caution about using on food contact surfaces on the 3M I have. I still don't plan on using either on the grates but I guess I feel better about the 3M based on the USDA references.

I am a little confused, it has mineral oil, isn't that a petroleum distillate? huh.gif

Eric D

huh.gif I would have thought so but, hey, I'm just repeating what's on the can. It was pretty late last night when I wrote it down off the can so I wasn't concentrating a whole lot. blink.gif After further research "Mineral oil or liquid petrolatum is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. It is a chemically inert, transparent, colorless oil composed mainly of alkanes and cyclic paraffins, related to white petrolatum. Mineral oil is a substance of relatively low value, and it is produced in very large quantities. Mineral oil is available in light and heavy grades, and can often be found in drug stores." So I guess I'm not sure what they mean now. sad.gif But both statements are on the can. dry.gif

Bill
Eric D
Bill,

It probably really doesn't matter. The main thing, it sounds like their (3M) stuff is safe around food, even the mineral oil. I could see where a light coat of mineral oil would help control finger print marks. The mineral oil would camouflage the finger oils that make the marks.

Eric D
bill b
Yes I think so too. Now I have to find out where you can purchase it. I can get it from my neighbor who gets it from where he works. But that doesn't help you or anyone else interested in trying it. sad.gif I'll keep working on trying to find a source.

Bill

My neighbor says his company gets it from Ronco Industrial Supplies at $7.10 a can in quantities of 12 but I think they're just an iindistrial suply house. Here's a couple sources that I've found:

Instawares
Waresdirect

I noticed earlier in this thread someone linked to the Zep products. I have a Zep saleman come to our butcher shop once a month and they make very good products. They make a smokehouse cleaner (which I have used on the innards of my grill) that does a fantastic job. Also use their stainless steel cleaner on our meat cases and the exterior of our smokehouse - again it looks like new when we get done.

As we are a small shop we can't afford to replace things as frequently as we like, so we do a lot of maintenance to keep things running and looking good.

Good info michiganbutcher

What are some of the products you'd recommend and are they available to the generasl public?

Thanks in advance.

Bill - I looked at Zep's website and found the link to their smokehouse cleaner:
http://www.zep.com/ProductCatalog/ProductB...subSection=1022

It did look like there was a number to call if a consumer wanted these products. I normally place my order when we get stuff for the butcher shop, normally they give us a break if we buy "x" amount of product.

What I like about their products is they give you a USDA inspection sheet which details what their products are made of, and details how they are safe for use in a processing environment. Our state inspector loves it - helped me score some brownie points with him.

I had my wife pick up some of the Barkeeper's Friend you mentioned earlier in this thread to try it out. The stainless steel cleaner is great for getting the grill a high luster sheen, but it doesn't seem to work to well on some of the smoke stains that come out of the hood. I'm hoping the BKF will have more of an impact on the smoke stains.

I use a product called "CarbonOFF" that works great on the smoke stain on the back hood vent. I normally just clean the outside of the grill, I do not attempt to remove the stains on the inside.

Thanks michiganbutcher I'll check out the link. I was able to get mine out with the Barkeepers friend but it did take some consideralbe elbow grease before it was completely gone. I haven't had the problem since but I've not really tried a whole lot of smoking on my Jenn Air. When I really want smoke, I use my indirect charcoal smoker. Thhis summer I wamt to try the mod to close off someof the gap between the hood and body and hope that will hold more somke inside for some of that smokey flavor.

Found another product from Zep - this stuff is awesome! It's called Oven Brite and it is definitely safe for stainless steel. Had some smoke stains from where the hood contacts the main part of the grill, sprayed on and just wiped off with a finer Scotch Brite Pad. Very minimal work - hardly had to scrub at all. Grill looked great when it was finished. I did find the product at Zep's site -

http://www.zep.com/ProductCatalog/ProductS...mp;pageNumber=3

just in case anyone else wanted to check it out.

If anybody is still looking for 3M SS Cleaner and Polish I found it at Barbeques Galore here in SoCal.

I have a new Weber Summit S850 grill.
I used the smoker and the grill a lot in the past couple of weeks.
There are large stains that looks similar to the pictures posted on the first post.
These stains are located on the outside of the grill (the cover, the back, etc...)

Is there a cleaner I can purchase on the web (or a local store like Home Depot) that is safe and easy to use on Stainless Steel grills? Any information / links would be appreciated.

Thank you!
